European Health Insurance Cards (replacing the E111) were introduced in 2000 with a 10 year card life.

It is the responsibility of each individual traveller to check that all travel documents are accurate and up to date before and during the journey. Citizens of the European Union must have a passport valid for six months after the date of your scheduled flight home. If you are not a European Union citizen, other regulations may apply to you and you should check with the nearest Embassy or Consulate of the country which you intend to visit.

Tours organised by BAT Adventure often contain internal flights on some routes; therefore we need your passport details at the time of booking in order to process the tickets for you. If you need to renew your passport after you have booked, you should advise us of the new details as soon as possible to allow us to update the data. You may be required to take your old documents with you to ensure the validity of the trip.

All visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. Please note that visa regulations can change and are dependent upon the nationality of the traveller and the destination they are travelling to. You may wish to arrange a visa yourself or have a travel agency arrange this on your behalf. Whether you are going on a three-month trek to Tibet or a family break in France, it's important to have adequate and appropriate travel insurance.

Travellers wishing to participate in trips organised by BAT Adventure must ensure that they have a valid insurance policy which will cover the cost of all medical expenses, including emergency repatriation. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, booking cancellation or curtailment, baggage and personal effects.

When purchasing your policy you should check that the insurance covers all destinations and the duration of your stay, as well as any specific activities you might do, for example winter sports, scuba diving or white-rafting. The insurance should pay for all of your treatment in all countries and repatriate you if necessary. It is important that you carry certification of all documents with you during your trip.

Please ensure that you pay particular attention to the exclusions written in your policy. It is your responsibility to make sure that your policy meets your needs.

European Health Insurance Card

Every European Union resident is entitled to free or subsidised health care when visiting countries in the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. The EEA consists of the European Union member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

The card enables you to access health care that you may require during your trip due to either illness or through accident. It also covers you for pre-existing conditions. You may be entitled to receive your care/treatment at a reduced cost or free. You can get a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) free of charge by:

  • Applying on line through the EHIC website
  • Calling on 0845 606 2030
  • Picking up an application form from the Post Office

You can apply for yourself or on behalf of your partner and any of your children who are under 19 and in full-time education. If you are under 16, your parent or guardian will have to apply for you. You will need to provide a name, date of birth and national insurance number for each person. Your card will normally arrive within seven days.

Travelling to different environments and climates abroad is very exciting, but it can expose you to disease and health risks. With so many things to do and see when you get there, the basics of health are often neglected. You have to start preparing for your trip six to eight weeks before you go. Visit your GP or travel health expert as soon as possible to check if you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures (such as malaria tablets) to protect you from infectious disease.

Certain types of vaccination have to be administered well in advance of your departure, so check the vaccination information to make sure you have your injections in enough time. Both antimalarial medication and vaccinations depend on which countries you intend to visit and how long you will be away. Remember to tell your doctor where you will be staying: there is a big difference between an independent backpacker’s trip and a luxury holiday in a five star resort.

Don't forget to carry with you on your holiday the signed and stamped international vaccination card.

Many infectious diseases are transmitted through contaminated food and water. You can reduce your risk by following some basic guidelines.

Always use bottled water if you have any doubts about the quality of the water. Check that seals are unbroken.

You should avoid:

  • Drinking tap water or using it to brush your teeth in countries with poor sanitation.
  • Ice used in drinks, unless you're sure it is made from treated or chlorinated water.
  • Food exposed to flies and food kept at room temperature in warm environments.
  • Uncooked fruits and vegetables unless you can wash and peel them yourself.
  • Un-pasteurized milk, cheese and ice cream from unreliable sources or undercooked or raw seafood or shellfish.

All participants with pre-existing health problems are required to fill out and submit the Medical Form. This questionnaire can be completed on-line or downloaded and sent by email or can be printed and  post to our office within 30 days before the date of commencement of journey. Why do I need to fill in this form?

Some adventure trips are organised to parts of the world where there is limited access to medical care and benefits. Although serious health complications happen rarely, they can happen. For this reason, this necessary information could help us to take action in emergency situations. Generally our excursions are for people with good health, to ensure safety for all travellers.

In addition, all travellers visiting Antarctica are obliged by the International Association of Tour Operators (IAATO), who organise expeditions to the white continent, to provide data and contact information necessary in the event of unforeseeable random events.

What happens if you are not able to fill in a Medical Form?

If you make a booking and refuse to complete the essential medical forms electronically or by paper within 30 days from the date of commencement of the journey, BAT Adventure reserves the right to consider cancellation of your trip as set out in the terms and conditions which can be found within the Booking Terms and Conditions.

It is very important for your own health and safety to provide complete and reliable answers to all questions contained in a medical form. In the event of a serious illness, the data provided may prove crucial. It is rare for any traveller to be refused a place on our trips for medical reasons.

Before a definitive decision is taken on the nature of the journey and the destination, it is important to take into account not only the geographical position and the attractiveness of the region concerned, but also the level of comfort, the prevailing weather conditions and whether the trip is suitable for the level of physical fitness of all members of your party.

Please note that our adventure tours are, by their nature, active and involve some travel to remote destinations. It is therefore imperative that you understand exactly what is involved and are confident that you can fully participate in all activities included in the trip. In order to identify the style of the expedition in terms of difficulty, you should familiarise yourself with the  grade system presented below. This will enable you to choose a trip suitable for you.

CLASSIC – Trip designed for participants with basic fitness. The journey plan provides additional time for relaxation or individual selection of attractions, depending on your interests. This type of travel is recommended for people interested in the world, but who would prefer a slower pace of sightseeing.

ADVENTURE - Trip with a fairly extensive travel programme with a relatively  fast pace. Varied activities require that the participants have a medium level of fitness. Adventure tours are designed for people who want to see the world in its original form.

CHALLENGER – Trip requires high strength with very good physical /mental health. They are often extreme expeditions in parts where the infrastructure is very poorly developed or in general it does not exist. Often there are also potential risks to health or life.

FAMILY – Holiday prepared especially for families with children. The nature and pace of sightseeing and the travel programmes are adapted to the requirements and health of the youngest participants.
